The Uncertainty of Infertility

Infertility is full of surprises and often, disappointments. Monica Ashton, LCSW, PMH-C, will discuss ways to prepare for and manage the emotions that come with the ups and downs of a fertility journey, and Erica Johnstone, MD, will talk about why there is so much uncertainty, and why disappointments and challenges don't mean the end of the road.

Erica B. Johnstone, M.D., M.H.S., is a gynecologist and reproductive endocrinologist in the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. Dr. Johnstone's clinical interests include reproductive endocrine disorders and all types of infertility, and she also works with hormonal disorders in children and adolescents. Her research interests include polycystic ovary syndrome and ovarian aging. Dr. Johnstone received her bachelor’s degree from Yale University, and earned her medical degree and completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Duke University. She joined the University of Utah Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2010. She enjoys running, biking, and hiking with her husband and 2 young children.

Dr. Hotaling is a fellowship-trained urologist specializing in Male Infertility and Men’s Health. He completed his undergraduate work at Dartmouth, graduating magna cum laude with a double major in history and biophysical chemistry. He then went to Duke for medical school and completed a 6-year residency at the University of Washington, where he trained with one of the top penile reconstructive surgeons in the world, Dr. Hunter Wessells. There, he had extensive training in Erectile Dysfunction, Peyronie’s Disease and Male Infertility. He has also had extensive training in micro-surgery, including TESE, microTESE, and Vasectomy Reversal. He is also one of the only Men’s Health and Infertility experts in the United States to have undergone additional training to become a Fellow of European College of Sexual Medicine (FECSM).His practice consists exclusively of Male Infertility, Men’s Health, Erectile Dysfunction, and surgical management of Testicular Pain and Peyronie’s Disease.
My goal in working with patients is to help them achieve their fertility and/or men’s health goals with the most cost-effective and data-driven means possible. We see many patients with male infertility, erectile dysfunction, complex scrotal pain and Peyronie’s disease each week and strive to provide optimal care for each of these conditions.

Experiencing infertility is not exclusive to females. Men are often overlooked when it comes to diagnosing and treating the various causes of infertility. In our first breakout session, we'll be discussing various male-factor infertility diagnoses and how we help couples experiencing infertility. The second session will be our panel discussion for any and all questions relating to male infertility.

Kelli Gross, MD, is a fellowship-trained urologist specializing in Male Infertility and Men’s Health. She completed her undergraduate work at the University of Texas at Austin, graduating with a BA in Studio Art and a BS in Psychology and. She earned her medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch and completed her residency at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona. Dr. Gross elected to pursue an additional year of training at the University of Utah focusing on Male Infertility and Men’s Health.

Her surgical specialization includes the treatment of erectile dysfunction including surgical placement of inflatable penile prosthesis (IPP) where she has extensive experience in both minimally invasive infrapubic and penoscrotal approaches. She also has expertise in microsurgical procedures including vasectomy reversal, microTESE, microscopic varicocelectomy, and microsurgical spermatic cord denervation. She is also trained in penile plication for penile curvature and sees a high volume of patients for injection procedures for Peyronie's disease. She also performs holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP), and is the only surgeon in Utah to do this surgery at the current time. Her practice consists exclusively of Male Infertility, Men’s Health, Erectile Dysfunction, Peyronie's disease and surgical management of Testicular Pain and Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia.
